Now, I don’t really “put my shoes in their places” when I watch the movie. But this movie hits close to home. He isn’t just a struggling salesman, he is a struggling medical equipment representative. Some would say it is the same industry where I’m in right now. The equipment Christopher Garner’s selling is considered as a “Medical luxury” and I know about medical luxuries and how painful one can market and sell the product and with the revitalized Milk Code and the generics law being passed in congress. The life of someone in the medical industry is getting smaller and smaller.
I could relate to the story in a certain level and at the same time I feel that the producers are successful in making the film as realistic as possible. As life like as possible. They were also successful in making the movies’ mood consistent. It is emotionally effective and they way the events unfolded made the watcher suffocate more and more just like squeezing the life out of you. The happiness out of you.
My breaking point in the movie is the subway bathroom scene. Although I will not place spoilers in this entry. I would like to say that I almost walked out of the cinema after watching the scene. I couldn’t take it. It was so emotionally heavy that seeing It broke my heart.
The film shows the viewer how life can be so cold. how life can rub it in you that it won’t get any better than what we have right now. Life sucks. Live with it.
But if you really think about it. There are happy moments in our lives that we will always treasure. we might not win all of the battles, but we surely won’t lose all of them right? The film is all about chasing that single moment where we could consider ourselves happy. Where we feel we are on top of the world. It might not be permanent. It might not last long. But we wouldn’t have cherished it that much without those moments when we were down and we lost.
The misery and disappointments make the moments we win more significant. I hope all of us find the happyness we all are looking for.
