56. Why here?

I’ve been staring at the screen for hours now not knowing what to write. Browsing from one site to another trying to get an idea from anywhere in the web. My mind is blank. Is it because of the diet? The fact that my wife is back in Singapore and I’m still here? Then something popped into my head. I don’t know why but I remembered what an acquaintance said two days ago. He’s actually a foreigner. An American I think. Forgot to ask where he was from but judging from his accent, he’s from the land of the free and the home of - err.. I guess you know from where.

He’s retiring and he actually plans to live the rest of his life here in the Philippines. Of all places right? Why here? Everyone wants to go somewhere else. When my wife asked why, he answered. “What will happen in the next twenty years here in the country will blow your mind! Technology, infrastructure you name it, it will all happen in the Philippines.” then he jokingly adds, “and I will take 3% of it.” That’s when I learned he’s a contractor and he wants to invest in our country.

Before I thought, this guy is going to be disappointed, with all the red tape, dirty politics and outlaws here this guy doesn’t stand a chance. Plus the hopelessness of the people, the negative outlook of people here are contagious. Then I remembered. I was one of the positive ones before. I have high hopes for our country. I know there will come a time when the Philippines will bounce back. We won’t be Asia’s donkey anymore and that we’ll be looked up upon.

If someone from not here believes we could be better, then why can’t we? I think we have to look deep in ourselves and for once, we have to look at the positive side of what we have and I think if we could think like this as a nation. Then we will progress.
