73. Chrome Revolution
September 3, 2008
Most of you have heard about the rumors regarding Google and how they’re planning to make a browser which will revolutionize our internet experience. This rumor has turned into reality with the latest innovation from Google - the Google Chrome.
At first, I was really hesitant to try out the new browser considering how much I enjoy using fire fox and their awesome add-ons. It made one fire fox completely different from another. Customization is literally the strength of fire fox that left internet explorer eating internet dust. But after reading a lot of praises from plurkers chrome caught my attention, I downloaded the beta version and tried it. You know what happened? I forgot about fire fox and used Google chrome the whole day.
I don’t want to give a detailed review of the new browser. If you want to learn more about Google chrome, better see it for yourself. There are stuffs about Google chrome I really love and one is that it is so light to use and does not use up a lot of memory. It loads within two seconds after I clicked the icon while fire fox loads around five seconds. Well, I have to be fair, I’ve installed a lot of add-ons in my fire fox and I could have compromised its loading time in exchange for customization and versatility.
One awesome innovation that Google included is the new tabs button. When you open a tab, you’ll see a visual sampling of your most visited sites; most used search engines, and recently bookmarked pages which, cuts down a whole bunch load of time typing in sites you frequent. Example:

Isn’t she a beauty?
Google Chrome warns you if you’re about to visit a suspected phishing malware or otherwise unsafe website by telling you what you’ll get if you proceed to the site. Imagine if everyone tells you what you’ll get if you sex them up? Incidence of gonorrheal diseases will definitely lessen. The world will be a much safer place; it’s like the salvation of mankind.

Enter at your own risk
The last thing they added, literally blew my mind. It’s the incognito mode or that thing which I call stealth mode. Incognito mode would be a likely tool in viewing porn behind your wife’s back. Sites visited using the incognito tab will not be reflected in the browser’s history. It will also delete cookies after using the stealth browser. There is only one word to describe this innovation - genius.

Notice the silhouette of a spy? Nice huh?
This awesome browser though is far from being perfect. I’ve noticed some bugs especially while scrolling down a website; it hangs for seven seconds or so. Also, it doesn’t have an rss feed thingy which helps me keep up to date with blogs that I follow. Aside from that, there are also some websites which aren’t compatible with chrome. One site is flickr.com. Another incompatible one hits near home. http://i.ph, my blogging service which is understandable because it’s new.

Yes, I blogged using fire fox
With everything considered, I just can help but grin, it’s the browser of the future me thinks, the new easy to use browser that is worthy enough to replace my fire fox. And you know what else? It’s still in beta. I believe that this awesome browser will have more stuff in the future. I sincerely hope they add those very useful add-ons I have grown to love and enjoy in fire fox.
So what else are you waiting for? Go download it now!

Also, I’m not complaining about i.ph and chrome’s incompatibility ade because really, it’s a good excuse if I want to use the ol’ reliable fire fox.
I’m using Chrome now and, so far, I’m not liking it. Maybe I got too spoiled by Firefox’s add-ons.
But yes, it is fast.
Posted by aimeerae at September 4, 2008, 4:06 pmi hate to burst your bubble but those features (well, almost) are already available to firefox (checkout speed dial and stealther). what i really like about chrome (although i haven’t downloaded one… yet) is that every tab is independent from each other (each has its own process). so even though one tab crashes, it will not affect other tabs.
for me it’s not a big jump like internet explorer to firefox. so for now i’ll stick with our ol’ reliable firefox+extensions.
i don’t know if they still do but google used to fund the firefox project. i wonder what happened. im curious how chrome vs. firefox plays out.
Posted by chev at September 4, 2008, 8:44 pmAimee, it is fast isn’t it? I mean not just for the surfing part but also firefox’s loading time, like I said it takes around seven seconds for firefox to load compared to chrome’s 1 or 2 second loading time.
Which bring me to chev’s point. Yeah firefox also has all the features I said. But you have to install the add ons and more add ons mean more memory usage and more memory usage means more crashes. While with chrome, you have all those features already with the browser. Get my drift?
Chrome is like a synergy of firefox and safari. Google incorporated the best of both browsers plus their own touch. So yeah, it’s a great browser really.
Posted by avatar at September 4, 2008, 11:39 pmIt’s fast but not very functional — at least not when compared with Firefox. There’s a lot I can’t do with Chrome that I used to be able to do even with IE.
I’m giving myself a week of familiarization with Chrome. If I find it too cumbersome, I’ll ditch it and wait for the release version.
Like Chev, I am curious as to how Chrome vs. Firefox plays out.
